Environment Research Group, R&D and OMQ Division at Tata Steel are jointly organizing national workshop titled “Mines Waste Valorization & Water Conservation” on 20th and 21st December, 2017 at Noamundi, Jharkhand, India. The workshop is dedicated to the key problems of mining, for which activities related to sustainable development are a great and important challenge.

The aim is to contribute towards near zero-waste processing and closed water and material loops by offering researchers and industrial experts the opportunity to share knowledge and critically discuss the challenges and opportunities in the field of water recycle, rain water harvesting, process water optimization and solid waste valorization and by being a fertile ground for new collaborations. To promote and spread knowledge not only concerning the idea of sustainable development in mining, but most of all, specialist knowledge derived from national and international research as well as technological solutions and methods, in which this vital idea is implemented.

To that end, specialists and/or high level representatives of the key institutes in this field from both academia and industry are invited to give a lecture covering a specific topic in a relatively detailed way, striking a balance between scientific depth and relevance as regards industrial application. The content of the workshop provides a rich overview of the contemporary trends in the worldwide research and innovation strategies as regards the valorization of solid waste and other (metallurgical) residues specific to mines , Rain water harvesting, Water Reuse & Recycle, and Process water optimization.

About R&D

The Research & Development and Scientific Services division of Tata Steel Limited at Jamshedpur set up in 1937 as the ‘Research and Control Laboratory’ was one of its kind in India. Its three departments – Research and Development, Scientific Services and Refractory Technology Group – support the Tata Steel group, particularly its operations in India and South East Asia, by developing new products and processes to create competitive advantage, better environmental performance and enhanced sustainability.

About OM&Q Division

Tata Steel's Ore Mines & Quarries (OMQ) Division comprises of four iron mines. At a distance between 130 and 170 miles from Jamshedpur and 125 miles from Kalinganagar, the mines and quarries spread across the conjoint districts of Joda, Keonjhar, Malda and Sundargarh in Odisha and West Singhbhum in Jharkhand. Noamundi and Joda East Iron Mines were designated Five Star mines by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India for their sustainable mining practices. The rating has built-in environment and forest safeguards.
